Zones Update Day 3
Thursday, August 2nd: Zones Day 3. From Head Zone Coach Jimmy Smith:
Today's weather was a cool 107 degrees, sunny skies and windy. Wait, that was same as yesterday. Ahh, Texas! They say a cold front is coming in Friday... down to 105... better get the parkas!!!
The morning prelims went will with many swimmers again right on their times from states. They are realizing how tough the competition is at this meet. Teams like Georgia are really stepping up breaking all kinds of records in finals. As a coach, I hope this is an eye-opener for the swimmers for the future.
Moving into the evening's finals, SC Swimming had some amazing swims. The night began with Jonathan Boland dropping another 2 seconds from his personal best in the 200 backstroke in prelims (2:13) to go a 2:11 and finishing 6th place. Later in the meet, Jonathan competed in the 100 free, nearly matching his personal best from prelims (:54.2) to swim 54.3 and placed 8th.
The next exciting swim for the evening was Madeline Reilly swimming the 11-12 50 backstroke. She did an amazing job of finishing 3rd from lane 8 with a 32.1. Not to be outdone, Walker Leftwich swam a blistering 2:14.4 to take 3rd as well. Walker had a come-from-behind race as he was 4th at the 3rd turn.
Madison Fields also moved up the rankings in the 400 IM, swimming 5:14.0 to finish in 5th place. Nathan Delahunty was next in the 400 IM, also taking 5th in 4:47.4. For Madison, it was her first time at the podium, and for Nathan, he keeps stepping up with exciting swims!
In 400 free relay action, the 11-12 girls placed 10th with 4:19.5--Emily waters, Makenzie Blaakman, Carter Marchbanks and Madelline Reilly. The 11-12 boys were next, finishing 10th with 4:18.7--Emerson DeFoor, Brandon Meier, Ethan Thrasher and Campbell Smith. For the 13-14 year olds, the girls placed 7th in 4:05.4--Savannah Gaido, Peyton Wilson, Logan Kraft and Jessi Snover. The boys finished 6th in 3:48.2--David Sweezer, Colin Kemp, John Kelly and Nathan Delahunty. The last relays of the night were the senior relays, which were also the only relays to improve on their seed times. For the ladies, they're time of 6th in 4:05.13--Megan Charnovich, Caty Hueske, Tori Angermeier and Hannah Craig. Closing out the night were the men in 8th place with a 3:42.1--Ben Spinek, Travis Morrin, John Slavens and Jonathan Boland.
SC Swimming remains in 8th place, behind South Texas. Tomorrow is the all-important parade!
