Congratulations to Ed Hughes!!!
Congratulations to Ed Hughes!
The South Carolina LSC proudly announces and congratulates USA Swimming official, Eddie Hughes, as a most recent recipient of the Maxwell Excellence Award. The Maxwell Excellence Award is sponsored by Swimming World magazine and Maxwell Medals. These sponsors wish to recognize officials for their outstanding contributions to local swimming. Each LSC or other governing body can submit a candidate that is deserving of recognition. One official is selected by a sub-committee of the National Officials Committee to be recognized in Swimming World magazine every two months. As of 2010, there were over 10,000 officials in the USA Swimming program and only six get selected for this award per year. The only other SC LSC recipient of this award is Kent Easty. Jim Gluhosky nominated Eddie for this award. Jim wrote: “Eddie Hughes is the most “senior” official in South Carolina. For the last 24 years, Eddie’s efforts have been hard to match. Like most officials, instead of sitting in the stands, he started out officiating when his children were involved with USA Swimming. His children’s local team was also associated with the YMCA, so Eddie became involved with both USA Swimming and the YMCA programs. He is the current regional director and instructor of officials in the southeastern United States. In addition to being a past Officials’ Chair for the South Carolina LSC, Eddie has been and is still a long time coach for Riverside High School and conducts many USA Swimming and YMCA officials’ clinics. Although his children have since moved on from USA Swimming, whenever there is a meet of any caliber in the upstate region of South Carolina, you will find Eddie volunteering his efforts for the betterment of swimming. Time and time again Eddie continues to answer the call. During his most recent meet he was heard mentioning that he is enjoying officiating and working with swimmers as much today as he did when he first got started.” Many kudos to Eddie and thank you Jim Gluhosky for nominating this very deserving candidate for this prestigious award.
