    Zone Team Selection Process

1. The South Carolina Zone Team will be selected in the following manner:

8 athletes will be chosen per sex and per age group - 11-12, 13-14, 15-18 for a maximum of 48 athletes.

The first 5 athletes will be chosen from that year’s short course season. The application for the short course selection will be due at the end of the second day of the SCS short state championships.  The qualifying period will start on October 1st and finish after the last short course competition offered to SCS swimmers in April of the following year.  Zone team members will be announced at the spring banquet. Swimmers selected in the short course season must meet the current minimum 2 AAA time standard requirement.  In the event that there are not 5 qualified swimmers selected to the Zone Team during the short course period, the remaining number of swimmers will be selected during the long course qualifying period.

The remaining 3 or more athletes will be chosen from that qualifying period’s long course competition that is completed before 7/4.  The application deadline will be Memorial Day of that season.  These swimmers will be announced by 7/10 via email.  The final roster will be emailed to all teams and will be posted on the SCS website. If South Carolina Swimming is unable to field 8 swimmers with the required "AAA" minimum time standards South Carolina Swimming will choose the next top ranked applied athletes.

All selected zone swimmers will be responsible for turning in a signed continued training agreement.  This agreement will require the athlete to continue the high level of training necessary to make the Zone Team until the team departs for the Zone Championship Meet.   This document must be signed the swimmer, their coach, and one of the swimmers parents.Oct 2013

1. Once the method of selection in section II.C8.b above is employed and Swimmers with 'AAAA' time or better are chosen using that method, then the remaining swimmers (if any) shall be chosen using the following point system for all events:
   1. Top 10 National Age-group Recognition Time, using the age standard for oldest age in each bracket - 150 points;15
   2. The higher age time will be used in age grouped brackets.  For 11-12, the 12-year old standard, for 13-14, the 14-year old standard, for 15-18, the 16- year old standardApr 2009
   3. AAAA - 100-150 points (graduations based on time);
   4. AAA - 50-100 points (graduations based on time);
   5. AAA - in an event that has no swimmer yet selected -100 additional points.
   6. Graduations based on time is the time range between an 'AAA' and a 'AAAA' and between a Top 16 time will be divided equally into ten parts so that five points will be awarded for each part attained by the swimmer.

For Example:  (this is just an example--not necessarily the actual time used for this event):

Women's 11-12 100 free AAA –

1:08.19 = 50 points,

1:07.88 = 55 points,

1:07.57 = 60 points,

1:07.26 = 65 points,

1:06.95 = 70 points,

1:06.64 = 75 pts,

1:06.33 = 80 pts,

1:05.71 = 85 pts,

1:05.40  =90 pts,

1:05.09 = 95 pts,

1:05.09 =(AAAA) 100 pts.

1. Top point winners fill out the zone team until the maximum number of eligible athletes that the Southern Zone allows16 are chosen.  In the event of a tie on points, the swimmer with the fastest 50 free times shall be chosen.
2. Those Provisions in previous Legislation inconsistent with the above zones selection process are hereby repealed.
